We say goodbye to Amman and visit the mosaic city of Madaba. Where the Church of St. George houses the oldest known map of the Holy Land on its floor. Here, the Franciscans built a structure to protect a Byzantine church from the 4th and 6th centuries. Lunch in a local restaurant. After lunch we drive south, following the King’s Highway. An old, scenic, winding road with stunning views. When we get closer to Petra we visit Shobak Castle. It is built on the top of a mountain, in 1115. As the first of a long series of fortresses constructed east of the Jordan by King Baldwin I of Jerusalem to control the road from Egypt to Damascus.
